Before you hire: Flooring
Ask each provider to quote the same scope so you can compare the services, fees and exclusions.
- Compare material grade, thickness and product warranty.
- Discuss subfloor preparation and moisture evaluation.
- Identify transitions, trim and door adjustments.
- Confirm furniture moving, demolition and disposal.
Questions worth asking
- What happens if the subfloor needs additional work?
- Who supplies extra material for waste and future repairs?
- When can the floor be walked on and furnished?
What belongs in the written scope?
Material quantities, preparation, installation pattern, transitions, trim, removal, disposal and care requirements.
A local detail to check
Older homes and newer infill projects often need different approaches. Ask how a contractor will handle existing materials, access, and any work hidden behind walls. Confirm which permit office has jurisdiction before work begins.
Use the Tennessee license verification service and the state’s contractor consumer resources as starting points. Confirm project requirements with the appropriate local office.
