Before you hire: Remodeling
Ask each provider to quote the same scope so you can compare the services, fees and exclusions.
- Separate selected materials from allowances.
- Identify work included and specifically excluded.
- Agree how written change orders will be priced and approved.
- Ask how dust, access, debris and occupied areas will be managed.
Questions worth asking
- Who is the day-to-day contact?
- Which decisions must be made before work starts?
- How are inspections and subcontractors coordinated?
What belongs in the written scope?
Drawings or scope, material selections, allowances, exclusions, schedule milestones and a written change-order process.
A local detail to check
Older homes and newer infill projects often need different approaches. Ask how a contractor will handle existing materials, access, and any work hidden behind walls. Confirm which permit office has jurisdiction before work begins.
Use the Tennessee license verification service and the state’s contractor consumer resources as starting points. Confirm project requirements with the appropriate local office.
